Old love

My father has always loved my mother. Unconditionally. No matter what her faults are or what she goes through, he works his hardest to please her and do anything for her. He never forgets that he is lucky to have her. He never fails to remind her how much she means to him. He never lets the time they’ve been together equate to the dwindling of freedom or spark in a relationship.

After long days he will randomly come home with flowers. Giant gorgeous bouquets of all sorts of charming flowers. Often time my mother will make a comment about how flowers remind her of funerals. But this comment does not deter him. He continues to buy flowers, different arrangements each time hoping one will suit her. He’ll go to her favorite nyc bakery one day a week and get her a scone for breakfast on Thursdays. He’ll occasionally surprise her with her favorite cupcakes or cookies from a novelty cake shop. Recently my mother has been complaining about music and how she is not well adapt to modern technology so she can’t listen to her classics. He took it upon himself to spontaneously go out and buy a brand new but sleek and simple record player. A modernized but easily maneuvered version of the old classic. She immediately told him to take it back. But after he hooked it up and got it playing her favorite opera, she’s calmed down. 

That kind of relentless love is what I want. That kind of love where you will work 300 % to please the other every day of your life even when you might not be receiving the same kind of vigor every day. That kind of love where you accept their bad days and try your hardest to make them good. That kind of love where you will make sacrifices just to see the other smile. Just to see the other at ease even. 

No promise of rewards. No promise of paybacks. No promise of care back, love back, thank you backs, gifts back. You might not get anything back. But you will do it anyway. That love.
